In the last conversation of chapter 5 between Ralph and Piggy, it is mentioned to "keep the fire going." One of the reasons I think this is stated is for the same argument for why Piggy and Simon don't want Jack to take over. The fire is made for rescue and that is Ralph's intention. If it dies out one of the things Ralph wanted disappears and that means another bit of civilization goes away. This can also be represented in the way people say a light represents your soul. You want it to shine bright and if it dies out the good in you goes away. This is my interpretation for the day time.
On the contrary the fire can also represent savagery at night as we discussed in class. We said how the fire represents safety, warmth, and protection at night from the Beasties which is what savages need since they have strong fears. I think the boys who are on the side of civilization want to keep the fire going to keep the Beasts from coming out of them. When they are around the fire, they are still hopeful of getting rescued and the evil stays hidden and is not revealed.
