The poem "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" by Randall Jarrell has both literal and figurative interpretations. This poem is literally explaining how a fetus lays in the womb, the position and the conditions. In my opinion, the fetus dies either through miscarriage or abortion. Based on this time period, miscarriage seems more likely. The soon to-be born child looses "its dream of life" and is never fully alive. If the fetus is too large, doctors need to get the baby out of the womb.
Figuratively, the fetus is like the ball turret gunner. In a ball turret, a small man must lay in the same position as a fetus and fights in war while attached to a bomber plane. The man doesn't have a strong chance of survival and is high from the earth; not close to life. Once he dies he is pulled out and gone.
